iOS 13: All The New Features in Reminders App on iPhone

After being much ignored for a couple of years, the Reminders app is finally getting an update that it deserves in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. The app has been redesigned for the modern iOS styling and features some smart to-do features that we’ve become used to in third-party apps. Here are all the new features in the Reminders app on the iPhone and iPad.
Top Features of Reminders App in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13
1. A New Interface

The big-ticket feature in Reminders in the new interface and all the features that it enables. The interface has been modernized and simplified. It now includes the modern interface with big text that you’re used to with apps like Mail.

When you open Reminders, you’ll be greeted with a Dashboard kind of interface. On the top, you’ll find Smart Lists. Below, you’ll see all your groups and reminder lists. You can tap on the + button to add a new list.

When you’re in a list, tap on the + button to add a reminder.
2. Smart Lists

Smart Lists in the Reminder app are the biggest highlight. They’ll show up based on the reminders that you have. You’ll find Today, Scheduled, All and Flagged at the top. Tap on Today to see all the tasks that are due on the given day.
3. List Customization

When you’re creating a new list, you can customize all aspects of it. You can customize a list later on as well. Along with the name of the list, you can change the list’s icon and the color from the editing menu.
4. New Toolbar

When you’re creating a new reminder, you’ll see a new toolbar above the keyboard. It will have a couple of quick shortcuts. You can add a due date for the task (today, tomorrow, this weekend), add location, flags or photos to the reminder from this new toolbar.
5. Smart Suggestions For Time and Day

Reminders app has a version of natural language input that apps like Todoist are now known for. Type out something like “Dentist appointment at 6 PM” and Reminders will show a suggestion for “6 PM Today” to be added a due date for the reminder. Just tap on it to add it.

In our experience, this feature works best when you’re dealing with simple things. Either time or the day. But if you try anything complex like “Remind me to go to the dentist on 14th October at 3 PM”, it won’t work.
6. Grouped Lists

The new Reminders app also has better organization features. You can create groups for different lists as well. Go to the Dashboard, tap on Edit and then select Add Group.
7. Subtasks

This is a hidden feature in the Reminders app. You can create a subtask from the Details view but the best way to do this is by dragging and dropping reminders that are already on the list. Drag a reminder on top of other. Or swipe right on a reminder and select Indent.
8. Attachments and Link Previews

Reminders app now supports rich attachments. You can attach images, links, and documents. But you can’t attach PDFs and other files right now. To attach an image, use the Camera icon from the quick toolbar.

To attach rich preview for a website, just paste in the link. If it’s a video, you’ll be able to play the video right in the Reminders app as well.
9. Flags

Reminders app now has a flagging system. It’s an improved version of the old priority system. Swipe left on a reminder and then tap on the Flag button. It will add a little Flag icon to the reminder. And it will be added to the Flagged smart list at the top of the Dashboard.

Flagging can then work as a way to manually sort reminders in a special list.
10. Tag Contacts

Tap on the Edit button from the reminders list and then tap on the I button to go to the details view.

From here, tap on the toggle next to Remind me when messaging. Then tap on Choose person to select a contact.

Next time you’re messaging the person, a popup will show up with your reminder. Also Read:deepnude alternatives

5 Mac Apps Worth Checking Out - August 2019

Apps designed for the Mac don't typically receive as much attention as apps made for iPhones and iPads, so we have a series here at MacRumors designed to highlight useful and interesting Mac apps worth checking out and potentially investing in.

This month's picks include apps for overhauling your Touch Bar, updating forgotten Mac apps, controlling music, managing windows, and more, with many of these apps recommended by MacRumors readers.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

MacUpdater ($9.99) - MacUpdater is a simple little app that keeps track of the updates for all of the apps installed on your Mac so you can see at a glance which apps are out of date and need updating. It's super useful for apps that have been installed outside of the Mac App Store. You can scan your apps for free using MacUpdater, but updating more than 10 costs $9.99.

Moom ($9.99) - Moom is an app that's designed to let you quickly and easily move and resize windows on your Mac. It has preset sizes and locations, and also lets you draw grids to create custom window display sizes. There are also custom controls for moving, zooming, moving windows to a secondary display, centering, resizing and more, and window layouts can be saved.

Background Music (Free) - Background Music is an audio utility that's designed to automatically pause your music player when other audio starts playing on your Mac, unpausing it afterwards. It also offers per-application volume controls so you can make certain apps quieter than others, and it has an option for recording system audio.

GoldenChaos BTT (Free) - GoldenChaos BTT is a Touch Bar replacement interface that lets you overhaul the way that your Touch Bar works. It lets you change up the Home Strip, access modifier menus with the app switcher, control strip, window snapping controls, and more, and customize the size of dynamic menu options. It supports dock badges, widgets, and more. GoldenChaos is free, but requires BetterTouchTool, a Touch Bar customization app that costs $7.50.

EasyFinder (Free) - EasyFinder is a menu bar app that offers up quick access to important and frequently used files and folders, so you can get to what you need with just a click or two. You can add files and folders in different categories like Personal, Work, and Others, and you can get to that content right from the menu bar.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Is a Flagship Android Tablet That Takes on the iPad Pro

Android tablets are going nowhere but Samsung is not giving up on the segment. The company has announced the Galaxy Tab S6, a high-end Android tablet that takes on the iPad Pro.

The Galaxy Tab S6 packs a 10.5-inch 16:10 OLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. It features slimmer bezels than the Galaxy Tab S4 and ditches the iris scanner for an in-display fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a Snapdragon 855 chip, sports 6/8GB RAM, and 128/256GB storage. There’s a 7040mAh battery powering the tablet.Read Next:ipad home button not working

The tablet is only 5.7mm thick an weighs just 420gms. It has two stereo speakers on each side and a dual-camera system at the rear. There is also a magnetic strip at the back of the tablet which charges the bundled S Pen stylus. It is located at an awkward position though as one cannot keep the Tab S6 on its back when charging the stylus.

The stylus has the same functionality as seen on the Galaxy Note 9 last year. This means it can be used as a remote control for presentations, shutter button in the camera app, and more.

Samsung has also launched a keyboard accessory alongside the Galaxy Tab S6. It connects to the tablet using the pogo pings located on the left edge.

The Galaxy Tab S6 runs on Android 9.0 Pie with OneUI 1.5 on top of it. One of the interesting features of the Galaxy Tab is DeX. While its nothing new, the new desktop-like mode can be enabled when one connects the keyboard accessory to the Tab S6. It can also be triggered when the tablet is connected to an external display.

The Galaxy Tab S6 starts at $649, with the 256GB storage/8GB RAM variant costing $729. Samsung will also launch an LTE version of the tablet later this year.
Our Take

The pricing of the Galaxy Tab S6 puts it right above the iPad Air and below the iPad Pro. While the tablet might pack an impressive spec sheet and the DeX mode sounds impressive, the lack of a solid app ecosystem for Android tablets is a major bummer. Worse, Android updates are barely doing anything when it comes to improving the experience of using the OS on tablets.

Apple Discontinues iPhone SE, 6 Plus and 6s Plus in India

Apple is frantically trying to increase its market share in the price-conscious Indian market. The company started by pushing the sales of lower end models like the iPhone SE, 6 Plus and 6s Plus. Now the company has decided to stop selling iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus and 6s plus in India. Starting now iPhone 6s will become the entry-level iPhone in India.

According to Economic Times, Apple has devised a strategy that focusses on value aspect of the phone. In other words, Apple is worrying less about the market share and instead pushing higher-end iPhones. With this move, the entry barrier for iPhone is increased by Rs 8,000 ($116).

Apple executives remarked that the production has been stopped last month and the distributors have already been informed of the same. However, retailers will continue selling the discontinued iPhones in India until stocks last. It is also worth noting that the discontinued models are already out of stock in Flipkart (leading ecommerce company in India) and amazon.in.

In 2018-19 Apple improved its revenue and profit by focussing on the high-end iPhones. Meanwhile, the iPhone sales plunged, however revenue wise the company did better than before. Apparently, Apple’s sales in the April-June quarter was better as the company had dropped iPhone XR prices via a promotion.

One of the leading Apple trade partners told ET that “Cupertino does not want Apple India to chase volumes by discounting at the cost of profit.” the trader added, “These models which are being phased out will increase the average selling price of iPhones in India and boost both profit and revenue.”

Meanwhile, another Apple executive said that Apple will continue to work on the affordability factor by offering buy-back and cashback offers. Do you think Apple will benefit from discontinuing entry-level iPhones in a price sensitive market like India? Let us know in the comments below.

Carry Your PS4 Games in Pocket with iOS 13 and Sony’s Remote Play App

In a bid to allow iOS users to access console games, Sony had launched the Remote Play app in March this year. The app allowed PlayStation users to stream game over Wi-Fi when away from the console. While the stream quality was commendable, the controls fell short. The touchscreen controls lacked full support for select buttons and this left the users in the fray.

With the latest announcement, your iOS 13 device will double up as a portable PS4. You can access all the PS4 controls including console dashboard, store, and user profiles on iPhone/iPad. Thats not all, you can even use the iPhone/iPad mic as input to talk to your friends during a multiplayer session.

As expected, not all games are currently supported. However, iOS 13 users will still be able to play console games right on their iPhone/iPad. That being said I just wished the Remote Play App would allow game streaming via a mobile connection. The support for Xbox One S controller and DualShock 4 is also expected to help other game offerings. For instance, you can use Valve app to stream your games to the iPhone or iPad, provided that both the devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on its Xbox game streaming app for iOS. Once this arrives, iOS 13 users will also be able to stream Xbox games on their devices. It is also worth noting that Apple is finally warming up to gaming ecosystems. The company is also aggressive about the Apple Arcade and thus supports Xbox One S and DualShock 4 controllers for tvOS.

Leaked Screenshots Show Dark Mode in iOS 13, New Reminders App

With less than a week to go for Apple to announce iOS 13, the folks over at 9to5Mac have posted some screenshots of OS. The screenshots reveal how Dark Mode in iOS 13 would look like, the new Reminders app, and more.

The screenshots confirm that the iOS 13 Home screen on the iPhone is going to look similar to iOS 12. With the Dark Mode enabled though, the dock background will have a black tint. Apple could possibly also include new system wallpapers in iOS 13 that better match the Dark mode.

Enabling Dark Mode will also lead system apps like Apple Music to switch to a dark theme and it looks pretty stunning. From the screenshot, it looks like it is using a true black background which should be good news for OLED iPhones. That’s because OLED displays don’t need to light up their pixels for displaying black content which in turn should benefit battery life.

The screenshots also reveal a new UI for editing screenshots after they are taken. The background content is blurred to focus on the screenshot with the annotation tools having updated and easier to understand icons.

There is also a screenshot of the new Reminders app on the iPad Pro. The app has two layouts, with sections to quickly access all your tasks, scheduled ones, flagged, and more. The app will also look the same on macOS 10.15 since it is a Marzipan app.

Lastly, the icon for the new ‘Find My’ app has also leaked. This new app will replace the Find My Friends and Find My iPhone apps. It will come with a revamped UI and make it easier to locate your friends and devices linked to your iCloud account.

iOS 13 is easily shaping up to be a major release of the OS with plenty of new features to play around with. Are you looking forward to its release?
