Leaked Screenshots Show Dark Mode in iOS 13, New Reminders App

With less than a week to go for Apple to announce iOS 13, the folks over at 9to5Mac have posted some screenshots of OS. The screenshots reveal how Dark Mode in iOS 13 would look like, the new Reminders app, and more.

The screenshots confirm that the iOS 13 Home screen on the iPhone is going to look similar to iOS 12. With the Dark Mode enabled though, the dock background will have a black tint. Apple could possibly also include new system wallpapers in iOS 13 that better match the Dark mode.

Enabling Dark Mode will also lead system apps like Apple Music to switch to a dark theme and it looks pretty stunning. From the screenshot, it looks like it is using a true black background which should be good news for OLED iPhones. That’s because OLED displays don’t need to light up their pixels for displaying black content which in turn should benefit battery life.

The screenshots also reveal a new UI for editing screenshots after they are taken. The background content is blurred to focus on the screenshot with the annotation tools having updated and easier to understand icons.

There is also a screenshot of the new Reminders app on the iPad Pro. The app has two layouts, with sections to quickly access all your tasks, scheduled ones, flagged, and more. The app will also look the same on macOS 10.15 since it is a Marzipan app.

Lastly, the icon for the new ‘Find My’ app has also leaked. This new app will replace the Find My Friends and Find My iPhone apps. It will come with a revamped UI and make it easier to locate your friends and devices linked to your iCloud account.

iOS 13 is easily shaping up to be a major release of the OS with plenty of new features to play around with. Are you looking forward to its release?

Apple Maps Vehicles Will Begin to Survey Canada This Summer

Apple Maps may have had a rough start with iOS 6, but times have changed and it is now a serious competitor to Google’s own mapping system. Apple has announced that they will begin surveying Canada this summer.

Now, what does surveying mean? Apple will be driving around with their mapping cars over Canada in order to offer a “street view” of popular areas in the US’ northern cousin. Apple already offers many locations in the US where a user can show a “panorama-like” 3D view of the location from a person’s perspective.

While Apple is mapping out Canada, it has a lot of catching up to Google in this regard. Virtually every street in every major city (and a lot of smaller towns too) already has street view available in Google Maps while Apple Maps is just starting to spread outside of the US.

The vehicles will drive across all 10 provinces between May and November, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. Some rumours also suggest that the cars have been spotted in Toronto already but that’s unconfirmed. Omitted territories are Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut which aren’t populated by a lot of people, making the trip not worth it for Apple.

CIRP Data Indicates ‘iPhone U.S. Installed Base Continues to Plateau’

Back in April, Apple released its latest quarterly earnings report. Unfortunately, as is par for the course, the company didn’t divulge specific numbers. Not even for the iPhone. That’s why analysts have some room to weigh in.

Which is exactly what Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC (CIRP) is doing this week. The group has just released its latest report reflecting Apple’s latest quarter. According to the researchers, Apple’s installed base in the United States is now at 193 million units. That data reflects a period ending March 30, 2019.

That compares to 189 million installed base as of December of last year. Last year at this time, Apple was sitting at 173 million installed base.

“The US installed base of iPhones continues to plateau,” said Josh Lowitz, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder. “Relative to the most recent quarters, and especially to the past two or three years, slowing unit sales and longer ownership periods means that the growth in the number of US iPhones has flattened considerably. Of course, 12% growth in a year, after years of much greater growth is still good. However, investors grew accustomed to quarterly growth of 5% or more, and annual growth of almost 20%. This continuing trend prompts investors to wonder if iPhone sales outside of the US will compensate, and places greater pressure on Apple’s determination to sell other products and services to the installed base of iPhone owners.”

CIRP adds to that, saying that it expects Apple had global sales of 39 million iPhones.

If you’re curious about how CIRP uses its surveys to come to these conclusions, this is how they describe it:

“CIRP bases its findings on its survey of 500 US Apple customers, surveyed from March 31, 2019 – April 11, 2019 that purchased an iPhone, iPad, or Mac in the US in January- March 2019 period.”

Apple’s latest quarterly earnings were ridiculous, as usual. However, it is the company’s Services division that is getting a lot of attention as of late. And that will likely be the case for many years to come.

PSA: Don’t Swallow an AirPod Like This Person Did

Considering that Apple is still rumored to be working on water-resistant AirPods, one might imagine that they would not fare well traveling through a human’s digestive track. But apparently that isn’t the case!

Daily Mail has the report this week, telling the story of one Ben Hsu. Hsu is a Naval recruiter is from Taiwan’s Southwestern port city of Kaohsiung. According to him, he fell asleep with one AirPod still in his ear. When he woke up he tried to find it, like in the bed, but came up short. When he used his iPhone to track the AirPod, he heard the beeping following him around.

Hsu said:

“I checked under my blanket and looked around but couldn’t find it – then I realised the sound was coming from my stomach.”

Eventually, he figured out that he had swallowed the AirPod at some point in the night.

A trip to a local hospital confirmed that the AirPod was indeed in his stomach. The doctors informed Hsu that if the AirPod did not pass through his digestive tract on its own, then he would have to go through surgery to get it out. He was given a laxative to help with the ordeal and sent on his way.

The laxative worked. Hsu won’t have to undergo surgery. And he was able to find his AirPod again. Hsu said the truly wireless earphone still had 41% battery remaining. And after he washed it off and dried it, discovered that it still worked just fine, too.

Interestingly, it’s because of the plastic that the AirPod is encased in –hiding the lithium-ion battery– that Hsu didn’t suffer any major injuries:

“Dr Chen Chieh-fan, who works in the emergency room, explained: ‘Because of the plastic shell around the AirPod, the risk of it causing him harm in a similar way to swallowing a regular lithium-ion battery is much lower.'”

So, that’s your strange story for Thursday. Don’t swallow an AirPod. Not even for science.Sponsor ads:
