Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Is a Flagship Android Tablet That Takes on the iPad Pro

Android tablets are going nowhere but Samsung is not giving up on the segment. The company has announced the Galaxy Tab S6, a high-end Android tablet that takes on the iPad Pro.

The Galaxy Tab S6 packs a 10.5-inch 16:10 OLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. It features slimmer bezels than the Galaxy Tab S4 and ditches the iris scanner for an in-display fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a Snapdragon 855 chip, sports 6/8GB RAM, and 128/256GB storage. There’s a 7040mAh battery powering the tablet.Read Next:ipad home button not working

The tablet is only 5.7mm thick an weighs just 420gms. It has two stereo speakers on each side and a dual-camera system at the rear. There is also a magnetic strip at the back of the tablet which charges the bundled S Pen stylus. It is located at an awkward position though as one cannot keep the Tab S6 on its back when charging the stylus.

The stylus has the same functionality as seen on the Galaxy Note 9 last year. This means it can be used as a remote control for presentations, shutter button in the camera app, and more.

Samsung has also launched a keyboard accessory alongside the Galaxy Tab S6. It connects to the tablet using the pogo pings located on the left edge.

The Galaxy Tab S6 runs on Android 9.0 Pie with OneUI 1.5 on top of it. One of the interesting features of the Galaxy Tab is DeX. While its nothing new, the new desktop-like mode can be enabled when one connects the keyboard accessory to the Tab S6. It can also be triggered when the tablet is connected to an external display.

The Galaxy Tab S6 starts at $649, with the 256GB storage/8GB RAM variant costing $729. Samsung will also launch an LTE version of the tablet later this year.
Our Take

The pricing of the Galaxy Tab S6 puts it right above the iPad Air and below the iPad Pro. While the tablet might pack an impressive spec sheet and the DeX mode sounds impressive, the lack of a solid app ecosystem for Android tablets is a major bummer. Worse, Android updates are barely doing anything when it comes to improving the experience of using the OS on tablets.

Apple Discontinues iPhone SE, 6 Plus and 6s Plus in India

Apple is frantically trying to increase its market share in the price-conscious Indian market. The company started by pushing the sales of lower end models like the iPhone SE, 6 Plus and 6s Plus. Now the company has decided to stop selling iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus and 6s plus in India. Starting now iPhone 6s will become the entry-level iPhone in India.

According to Economic Times, Apple has devised a strategy that focusses on value aspect of the phone. In other words, Apple is worrying less about the market share and instead pushing higher-end iPhones. With this move, the entry barrier for iPhone is increased by Rs 8,000 ($116).

Apple executives remarked that the production has been stopped last month and the distributors have already been informed of the same. However, retailers will continue selling the discontinued iPhones in India until stocks last. It is also worth noting that the discontinued models are already out of stock in Flipkart (leading ecommerce company in India) and amazon.in.

In 2018-19 Apple improved its revenue and profit by focussing on the high-end iPhones. Meanwhile, the iPhone sales plunged, however revenue wise the company did better than before. Apparently, Apple’s sales in the April-June quarter was better as the company had dropped iPhone XR prices via a promotion.

One of the leading Apple trade partners told ET that “Cupertino does not want Apple India to chase volumes by discounting at the cost of profit.” the trader added, “These models which are being phased out will increase the average selling price of iPhones in India and boost both profit and revenue.”

Meanwhile, another Apple executive said that Apple will continue to work on the affordability factor by offering buy-back and cashback offers. Do you think Apple will benefit from discontinuing entry-level iPhones in a price sensitive market like India? Let us know in the comments below.
